oak or cherry are the most available and cheapest around here. you could use birch or oak plywood for the sides and solid wood for the top…

Depends on how much you want to spend and the look you want. Most nicer ones use oak or cherry, but I would leave that to the professionals. If you want to build a simple desk and have it look all uniform no knots or anything. You can use MDF. You can get it at lowes or wherever, its realtivly cheap maybe 15 bucks for a 4×8 sheet. It is easily paintable. Most more expensive furniture, to cut corners use this as the main part and then put the nicer wood slivers over it. If you want a nice desk surface you can also go to lowes or wherever and get countertop surfaces, which would make your desk look good they are around 20-40 bucks for a 4 x 8 sheet. But the MDF is easily paintable and is really easy to work with.

Since oak is my favorite wood, I’d go with that. If you have an Oak Express store near you, maybe you could visit that store & get some ideas as to what style desk you wnat to build.
